I hate Disney
I realize I may be speaking heresy to some but I do in fact hate Disney (no offense intended toward former or present employees of said corporate behemoth).
Maybe it is the way they advertise their new movies on Disney DVD ... like they invented it.
Or perhaps how the corporate cutthroats distribute their classics for a limited time and then advertise with great fanfare and pressure that it will be put in the 'vault' after a certain date, hurry now and buy, buy, buy!
Then again it could be that this corporation tried to swallow the truly creative and pioneering Pixar Studios that annoys me?
Or, the way the advertising department attempts to make every parent feel as if their child's childhood won't be complete without the latest from Disney.
Oh, I know, it must be the $3.00 bottle of water they sell at their themeparks.
Or maybe it is that Disney just seems to represent all of the negative things I associate with American mass consumption and comercialization of every avenue of life.
Yes, I do hate Disney Corp., but...
We were recently given free passes to the Magic Kingdom by some friends I helped move (they had A LOT of stuff, almost as much as Scott). I would have much rather preferred the same dollar equivalent in say a Borders gift certificate, but alas, twas not meant to be. Anyhow, my wife wanted to go during the summer and on a weekday as to avoid the crowds, so we went yesterday. I won't bore you with all the details. . . well, not all of them anyway.
I hate Disney, but I have to admit, I had one of the best times of my life yesterday. We had not been to Disneyland since 1997. They have improved a bunch of stuff. But that wasn't the best part. I think what nailed it for me was that I was with my family. My oldest boy had never even been, and the baby, well he won't remember a thing.
Everything was new. I was actually able to see things through my son's eyes and for the first time. It's a Small World was never better. The Jungle Cruise, hilarius, because my oldest had never heard all the same jokes. The Mark Twain Riverboat might as well have been chuggin' up the Mississippi for real. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Pinnochio's Daring Adventure, Splash Mountain, Astro Orbiter (though I got dizzy) and the baby fell asleep in my arms while we all rode Pirates of the Caribbean. All of it was new. And all of it better than I ever remember it as a kid.
Not just that, but the people seemed more interesting and entertaining. Disneyland is one of the few places where you can go and meet people from dozens of countries. Before we left I gave my son the lecture about how this might be one of the few times that foreigners will see how American children behave, so it was important to have fun, but also be polite. He was. But the people, and there were many of them despite our efforts to avoid crowds, just seemed to be more interesting to me. Did you know there are rude people from every continent? Plus I heard at least 8 diffrent languages that I could identify and witnessed children throwing tantrums in 3 languages other than english. It was great. I could hear "It's a Small World After All" ringing in my ears.
And at the end of the day, after over 10 hours of being on my feet walking, running, laughing, behaving like an idiot for my kids, we all settled down to watch the fireworks. I don't think I will ever forget the looks on the faces of my children as they watched spellbound. It was, forgive the cliche, magical.
And I was able to put aside all my negativism, cynicism, pessimism, skepticism... all my isms for a day, to suspend my disbelief and be a 34 year old kid. It felt great. I grudingly admit that Disney had something to do with that.
So maybe I don't hate this iconic corporation as much as I thought.
But they have got to drop that DVD thing.
Be well all.

Just wanted to say I totally agree with everything you said about Disney, especially after my family went on one of their cruises. A corporate mammoth creating one childhood experience for all children, limiting creative expression, yet fun and magical with that suspension of belief.
I also really like Heinlein, I just had to note. My favorite short story, starting when I was a young teenage girl, is "Menace from Earth." None of my friends have ever had much interest in Heinlein's work; it was fun to see his name in your profile.
Alas, I love the mouse.
I love the magic behind the mouse (in limited application).
I love the mystery that the magic behind the mouse brings to mind.
But I don't love the marketing behind the mystery that the magic behind the mouse brings to mind.
Or the "man" that mandates the marketing of the mouse's magic mystery.
Or the malevolent impacts of anthropomorphic indoctrination that the mysterious, magic mouse manifests in its movies.
But I do love Natalie who currently moils for the magical mystery mouse.
Mike,
this is a great post. Almost everyone I know who has worked for Disney high up says the same thing, 'Walt Disney is dead; it's now about money.' And maybe that's where the tension comes from. Your family experienced the wonder of Walt's vision, but you also see the legacy of Eisner and others who took Disney's stock from worthless in the early 80's through multiple splits.
As for me, I love the myth and guess I ignore the marketing mostly. But when Steph and I had passes last year and went probably ten times with my brother and his wife, some of the magic wore thin and I think we'll take a year off.
The new park is pretty cool, also, though without those deep childhood recollections.
But to see it through the eyes of a little boy as you did...that really is the magic of Disney. Just like Christmas, everything changes when you live with small kids.

Just a little about Disney in my eyes. Disney has gone from being a great placeto just ok. I went for three week in Sept 07. Was the worst vacation I have ever had! Paid over 7000.00 for the trip. Not including the park ticket and my plane tickets. Add those in and we have a grand total of 9400.00 and change. Thats almost 10 grand to hate disney. One of my 3 very young children was injured in a park by and employee. My motherinlaw was injured by a careless bus drive while load here in a wheel chair on a bus. And The Old key west resort. Was dirty with trash everywhere bottles in the lakes. And the room we paid top dollar for had 7 light bulbs out we we walked in. Towel bars on the floor broken, Patio covered with trash and bird droppings. I asked my self did they say welcome home? Wow! Never in my life did I ever want to say it. Disney you gone from Riches to Rags. You suck. Next year after I sell my Season passes. And sell my Vacation Club membership. I plan on going to Universal! Disney would not even talk to us about any thiing. Wouldn't help the employees are getting more and more stupid. And most just ingnore you when an 67 year old woman is screaming in paid. You have lost a customer that has been going since 1971 when the park opened.

I hate disney ,such a boring place, full of negligence...Cheap, trashy, abusive wait in line for each attraction at least 50 minutes .So commercial, cheap trashy, trashy trashy...there's nothing magical about that place, nothing nothing ... disney is a manifiestation of everything that's wrong with American society.Such a waste...An "ADVENTURE" PERFECT FOR THE BUSY PARENTS WHO LOOK FORWARD TO REIMBURSE THEIR CHILDREN FOR ALL THE LOVE AND TIME NOT GIVEN DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS.All I saw was exhausted faces of children forced by their childish parents to get into attractions that were boring ,scary and yet so "MAGICAL".??? "SAY CHEEEEEESSS" FAKE SMILES FORCED TO TAKE IN FRONT OF THE CASTLE... Disney you SUCK!
I must personally say I do so hate Disney and everything about it, due to that very suspension of disbelief that permeates everything they touch. I can't help but think about my little sister, so happy and vibrant as a child... Now, she sits in front of the TV all day watching the same generic, vanilla flavored Disney sitcoms. And if the parents turn off the TV, it's the computer, watching clips endlessly on Youtube and Myspace Video... Disney has simply mass-marketed a rose-tinted view of reality to children who are not mature enough to make an educated decision between harsh yet enriching reality and happy yet utterly stagnant illusion. It's like media-marijuana for the whole family.
Great post.
While I understand and to some degree, agree, with the hatred towards the marketing machine behind the magic, not all families visit just to "reimburse" time not spent with the little ones...I don't think we always have to think so deep as to forget the simpler things to enjoy and cherish.
Our kids aren't glued to the TV all day, and, yet we can still really enjoy a week's trip to Disney for what it's worth. At times, we weren't familiar with some of the characters, but at the very least, it's being together away from home, away from our daily routine, taking in all the different activities in a place made for families to enjoy together. Who doesn't enjoy Ice Cream while watching the Disney parade go by, and watching your kids dance to the parade music? Or watching your kids eyes light up when they see something you just don't see elsewhere (huge castle, big Lego structures, Giraffes walking right out your back porch etc....)
All I am saying is, take a breather and go, enjoy, and don't take everything so seriously. Do you really blame Disney if little brothers/sisters/children spend all their time in front of the TV, or computer?
Disney is simply a biased corporate SOAB. I mean biased because they have to bag on any fricking race they chose. Most un-American B I have ever seen
I happen to be a disney fan. We take the kids 2x a yr and we usually camp. I don't take them to reimburse them with love; that's a crock if I ever heard one. I stay home and homeschool them; always have. We have had nothing but magic from disney and last sept they upgraded us to concierge for free. We have 4 kids and we never pay more than $3000 for a total package so if you pay more and are complaining about it, you arent doing something right.Disneyworld has magic but there is a bit of science that plays into doing this with finesse, as well. It is the best place for us to go as a family and let loose and really enjoy our children and despite what people think about returning numerous times, everytime is a new adventure with new destinations and there are still things we have yet to do. So a lot of your rantings are a misplaced anger from not doing your research, planning well, and/or this just not being your bag baby.
Lol i LIVE in orlando Fl and actauly work for one of the disney hotels (payin my way thro college! NOT a career!!) and i will say Disney treats its employees like SHIT to create this "magic" as they call it. Going as far as puttin boots on our tire wheels b/c we parked in the wrong parking lot. IF you think your food prices are jacked up...try having to pay that EVERYDAY on yout lunch break. oh no..disney does not spare its own emplyoees. INFACT we get thr worst of the treatment. Ask to see the Employee bathroms or cafeteria on your next visit. YOU WILL BE DISGUSTED. in fact i was wrtitten up for using one of the Public guest bathrooms in the lobbby once b/c our "employee" bathrooms were DISGUSTING and STUNK SOOO bad that i refused to use it . Then...try paying $6 bucks for a tuna sandwhich in the employee cafeteria and then having to eat in on your disguesting never cleaned employee cafeteria tables . GROSS . A Former employee of mine decided to help out a family visitng on a budget ...We all know that a single day admission to magic kingdom is expensive..soo as employees..we can get people in at no charge (probraly the only perk to working for this complany) so he decided to take his day off and take this family off 4 to all 4 disney parks...he charged then only $50 a person to visit all 4 parks..he saved this family HUNDRERDS..well some disney ass kisser at the ticket booth found out and went running to her supervisor like a rat . Turns out our complimentry tickets given to us cannot be sold , bartered or traded in anyway . stupid right? well after having taken this family to all the4 parks and showing them around...he was busted and his emploment was terminted. why? oh shit he saved a family money and made a little himself and disey didnt get to ripp off theses people???? BULLSHIT . I personaly hate disney and the way they not only rip off their guests but also their own employees. DISNEY PARKS ARE WAY OVER RATED . IN MY OPNINOIN...TRY UNIVERSALS ISLANDS OF ADVENTURES..BY FAR THE BIGGEST THRILLS IN THE AREA . oR BETTER...RENT A PLACE ON THE BEACH WITH THAT DISNEY VACTION MONEY ...SO MUCH MORE RELAXING. THATS WHAT I DO FOR MY VACATIONS.

Well, it sounds like you may have a Disneyland Obsession. It happens to the best of us, the tough, the cynical, and the hard headed. Sometimes it takes many trips to become infected, sometimes just 1 trip with the right people will do. But every Disneyland visitor will succumb to the infection, and there is no cure.
See Ya In The Parks!

I don't like Disney either. Hey everyone. Check out my RickeyMouseParody that makes fun of Mickey Mouse on youtube. Here is one of my clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_6DXP6Lruo
Even Jetix is Disney's now!
It's a disease! ):
EVEN JETIX IS NOW DISNEY'S!
I HATE DISNEY, GAH!
I hated Disney then and I hate it now. I hate the fake scenery, the fake-happy employees, the scripted responses to everything, the over-acting, the fact it cost me $5 for rubber band to hold my hair back, the crappy food, long lines, the fact rides spit you out into gift shops, the squalling children....every last bit of it, I hated and still hate. I'm glad you were able to overcome your hatred of it and have a grand time. Me? Not gonna happen. I will never go back.
